A missed opportunity

One of the most popular, and accurate, pieces of dating advice is the five-second rule. For those unaware, the five-second rule says that you if you see some you’re attracted to, you must approach them within five seconds. The logic is two fold: 1) it doesn’t give you the opportunity to overthink it, and 2) you don’t give someone else the opportunity to swoop in ahead of you. This advice has been repeated by relationship experts, pickup artists, and everyone in between, and it applies in every situation.

I recently saw an incredibly cute girl at the airport. Airports, by the way, are great places to strike up conversation with complete strangers. She had a very interesting style, short hair with a few longer whisps, a white peasant top, dark jeans, and flip flops. Her eyes were very honest and her face was quite unique; I had trouble determining her ancestry, which I always find very attractive. I first noticed her walking over to the small Starbucks in the terminal as I was heading in the other direction in search of food. With my stomach ruling my actions at that point, I continued on to get food.

When I returned, I noticed her sitting at my gate. I turned and looked at her; her eyes darted away, trying to mask that she had been looking at me. I turned around for a second and thought, with 45 minutes before boarding, there’s plenty of time to chat her up. I turned back to look at her again…and saw that an older guy (clearly just looking for someone to talk to) had struck up a conversation with her. I watched for a moment, trying to determine if this was someone she already knew and wanted to catch up with or someone she had just met. And then I waited to see if he would leave. He didn’t.

The two of them talked almost up until we all started boarding. I had missed my opportunity to meet this girl simply by hesitating. If I had applied the five-second rule, I might have left the flight with a number. Instead, I only have thoughts about what could have been.

Five seconds, eh? I say you’re entitled at least 30!

You snooze, you looze!

Yup, I deserved to lose her for waiting. Lesson learned.
